Pack Your Breakfast With Micronutrients For Peak Performance
If you want to get the most out of your ride then you need to fuel your body with essential minerals, vitamins, micronutrients, and macronutrients. You horse is not the only one in your relationship who needs to eat healthy on a daily basis.
One of the best ways to accomplish this is drinking fresh green juice daily.
Here is one of my favorite green juice recipes.
Green Juice
- 1 large lemon
- 1, 1-inch piece turmeric
- 1 bunch kale
- 1, 1-inch piece of ginger
- 1 cucumber
- 2 apples
I make my juice in my Breville Juice Fountain Elite.
I bought it just over three years ago and it is still going strong. I like it because it is mostly made of stainless steel with very little plastic. What little plastic it does have, is BPA free. Here are some of its other features.
- It has a heavy duty 1000 watt motor with two speeds, one for softer fruits and veggies and the other for those that are harder.
- It has an extra-wide feed chute that is great because you don’t have to chop your veggies up small to get them to go in the machine.
- It has titanium enforced blades with a stainless steel mesh filter basket to easily separate the pulp from the juice.
- It holds 1 liter of juice so you can make enough for several people.
Most importantly for me, it is easy to clean as long as you clean it right after use. Don’t let it sit for several hours or it will be harder, but still not impossible to clean.

So here’s why I picked the fruits and veggies that I include in my morning juice.
Lemons
I love the taste of lemon and I find that it can mask the taste of kale. It also is packed full of vitamin C that helps keep your immune system healthy and strong. It is antibacterial, alkalizes the body, cleanses the liver, and contains a powerful antioxidant called flavonoid that helps neutralize free radicals to keep you looking young. It has many more benefits that you can read about here.
Turmeric
Most of us are only familiar with turmeric if we have eaten Indian food. It is an extremely powerful root that can help heal your body when consumed. It contains an active ingredient called curcumin which is a powerful anti-inflammatory ingredient. It is used to treat inflammatory bowel disease, give relief to rheumatoid arthritis, help cystic fibrosis sufferers, and more.
Your body can absorb turmeric more easily when it is raw. Mix it with pepper when you cook with dried turmeric to allow your body to more easily absorb it.
Kale
Kale is one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. If you are not eating it you should. Many don’t like how it tastes and that’s why juicing is so great. Include apples and lemons in your juice to mask the taste of the kale. It is high in fiber, iron, vitamin K, and other antioxidants. Eating more of it helps lower cholesterol and it will detox your body.
Ginger
Ginger is a great tasting root that also will help your body flourish and stay strong. It helps with digestion and nausea, help you fight the flu and the common cold, reduces inflammation, and helps alleviate muscle pain and soreness. Use it to help you recover from strenuous rides. Here is a link to a great site detailing the benefits of ginger and a homemade spiced ginger tea recipe.
Cucumber
Cucumber is an excellent way to keep you hydrated on hot days on the trail or at a horse show without consuming a ton of extra calories. You can get relief from heartburn from drinking it. You will flush out toxins and help spur weight loss. It will help you stabilize your blood pressure, improve your digestion, and make your hair and nails look fantastic. All around it is a super veggie that should be included in your diet.
Apples
Horses love apples and you should too. In terms of making fresh green juice it is a great ingredient to make the overall taste of your juice much better. Apples are also very high in antioxidants. Most of this benefit is found in the peel so do not peel your apples. Keep the peel because that is where much of this benefit is kept. Eating apples help with brain health, prevent stroke, help people who suffer from diabetes, reduce the risk of cancer, and lower your risk of heart disease.
In conclusion,
I hope after reading this article you will consider adding green juice to your daily diet. And if you are already doing it try out my recipe.
Try it and then let me know what you think of it in the comments.
